Fusion Arts Exchange (FAX)

in Screenwriting and Film Production

What is the Fusion Arts Exchange (FAX)?

Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs, the Fusion Arts Exchange program provides cutting-edge technical training and fosters multi-national collaboration in the arts and beyond.

These programs offer outstanding undergraduate students an intensive, collaborative course on the latest developments in their respective fields, and in the history and culture of the U.S. as illuminated through the lens of their fields. Participants also learn about careers and current development opportunities, and have the chance to develop on-going collaborations with their fellow participants.

Current Student Leader Institutes include:

    * Digital Media and Computer-Assisted Design at Northeastern University
    * Music Composition and Performance at The Rhode Island School of Design
    * Screenwriting and Film Production at The University of Southern California
    * Sports Management at Texas A&M University

Screenwriting and Film Production Program at USC

The USC School of Cinematic Arts at the University of Southern California will host an exchange and study tour for 15 international undergraduate students from five Department of State-designated countries (Egypt, France, Lebanon, Mexico, and the Philippines) and five American undergraduate students beginning on July 7 and ending on August 15, 2008.

In addition to the classroom work in writing and production, FAX will feature special speakers, screenings and seminars.  The Fellows will also visit studios, production and post-production facilities, special effects companies and other entertainment-related sites.

Following the workshops, the entire group will take a multi-day bus trip up the coast of California to San Francisco for a tour of historical and cultural monuments and film-related sites and companies set in those areas. They will also meet with scholars and artists along the way.  From San Francisco, they will fly to Washington, D.C., where they will spend the last few days meeting with students from the other Fusion Arts Exchange programs, receiving a debriefing by the State Department program officers, and touring the city’s landmarks.

Participants in Study of the U.S. Institutes are among the approximately 30,000 individuals who participate in exchanges managed by the Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) each year. Other ECA exchange programs include the Fulbright Program and the International Visitor Leadership Program. Through a range of academic and professional exchanges, the Bureau seeks to increase mutual understanding between the United States and other countries.
