Doe Mayer teaches documentary and fiction filmmaking and has been working in film and television for over 30 years. She holds a joint appointment in the Annenberg School for Communication where she teaches communication campaigns for social change and health communication. She also teaches in the School of Policy, Planning and Development.

She has produced, directed and provided technical support for hundreds of productions in the United States and numerous developing countries. Much of this programming has been in the areas of family planning, basic education, health and nutrition promotion, HIV/AIDS prevention, population, and women's issues. Among the many countries she has worked in are China, India, Pakistan, Uganda, Malawi, Eritrea, Myanmar, Vanuatu, Ghana, Mexico, Suriname, Egypt, Cameroon, and Zimbabwe.

Mayer coauthored the book Creative Filmmaking from the Inside Out. She has been a Fulbright Scholar to Fiji, and as a Fulbright Senior Specialist, she recently completed a fellowship in The Netherlands. She has received USC's "Remarkable Woman" award and is a Fellow at the University’s Center for Excellence in Teaching.
