New Critical Studies Faculty Book on Colonial Film Due Out Soon

Critical Studies associate professor Priya Jaikumar’s book Cinema at the End of Empire: A Politics of Transition in Britain and India is in print with Duke University Press.  In the book, she challenges the rubric of national cinemas that dominates film studies, illuminating the intertwined histories of British and Indian cinema in the late colonial period. Jaikumar contends that film aesthetics and film regulations were linked expressions of radical political transformations in a declining British empire and a nascent Indian nation between the 1920s and the 1940s.
