Critical Studies Professor Accomplishes Much
Dr. Akira Lippit, who holds a joint appointment in Critical Studies and Comparative Literature, notes that his essay, “The Derrida that I Love,” appeared in
Grey Room (no. 20, Summer 2005), which is a journal dedicated to the critical analysis of media and the arts. The issue featured a special dossier on the influence of French philosopher Jacques Derrida on the visual arts, and also included articles by Gayatri Spival, Samuel Weber, Yve-Alain Bois, Eduardo Cadava, and Emily Apter. His interview with Vietnamese- American filmmaker and theorist Trinh T. Minh-ha, “When the Eye Frames Red: An Interview with Trinh T. Minh-ha,” was published in her book,
Trinh T. Minh-ha, The Digital Film Event (New York: Routledge, 2005).
In July, Lippit participated in a symposium on the atomic bomb and cinema, which was held at Josai International University in Tokyo, Japan. The symposium featured YOSHIDA Kiju, renowned director of the new wave. The symposium was covered widely in the Japanese print and broadcast media. In addition, he will be lecturing at the University of California, Berkeley in November, and he has been invited to deliver three lectures in Tokyo, Japan, also in November, to commemorate the founding of the Department of
Culture and Representation at Tokyo University.
