Cinematheque108 Alternative Screening Series: Fall 2009

Cinematheque108 is an alternative screening series sponsored by the Critical Studies Department at the University of Southern California's School of Cinematic Arts. The series offers a rare selection of events that highlight noteworthy experimental, documentary, and/or foreign films, many of which can not be seen anywhere else. Cinematheque108 is an educational forum that provides screenings free of charge.

9/10 - Jennifer West 7:00 P.M. in SCA 108

West makes 16mm, 35mm and 70mm films by manipulating the film celluloid to a level of performance. The film emulsion might be doused with perfume, Jack Daniels or pepper spray, skateboarded on or dragged through tar pits.



9/17 - Year Long Loop 7:00 P.M. in SCA 108
Year Long Loop documents the sound and view as experienced from the vantage point of a ridge in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Mt. Washington.




10/01 - The Films of Peter Mays 7:00 P.M. in SCA 108
Renowned artist and experimental filmmaker Peter Mays will appear in person to present four of his unique avant-garde films from the 1960s to the present.




10/04 - Breaking the Maya Code 3:00 P.M. in Norris Theater
The 200-year quest to decipher the ancient Maya hieroglyphs has unlocked the secrets of a great civilization and re-connected modern Maya with their extraordinary past.




10/08 - Tales from the Script 7:00 P.M. in SCA 108

Screenwriters ranging from newcomers to living legends share their triumphs and hardships in this probing, insightful, and often hilarious odyssey through the world of movie storytelling. Candid and unafraid to name names, dozens of participants reveal the fascinating creative adventures that gave birth to notorious flops and beloved classics.


10/15 - "Chica Busca Chica" 7:00 P.M. in SCA 108
Co-hosted by the USC LGBT film group Queer Cut, "Chica Busca Chica” (Girl Meets Girl) is an online web series that tells the personal and emotional stories of a bunch of friends who are mostly lesbians.



10/22 - Restoring the Los Angeles Avant-Garde 7:00 P.M. in SCA 108
Academy film preservationist Mark Toscano presents a program of short avant-garde films from 1960s and 19070s Los Angeles, restored and screened on 16mm film.


10/29 - Chinese Female Filmmaker Series: Part 1 7:00 P.M. in SCA 108
A short series that highlights the influence of Chinese women filmmakers since the 1980s. Youth Sacrifice (qinchun ji青春祭, 1985) and Woman Demon Human (ren gui qing人鬼情, 1987) will be shown as part 1 of 2 of the series.



11/05 - The Films of Lewis Klahr 7:00 P.M. in SCA 108
Filmmaker Lewis Kalhr presents two of his unique collage animation film series Engram Sepal and The Ghostings of Apertures






11/12  - Sacred Language, Spoken Language 7:30 P.M. in SCA 108
 
Award-winning French-Israeli filmmaker Nurith Aviv will present a screening and discussion of her film, Sacred Language, Spoken Language, in which writers and artists born in Israel describe their relationship with the historical, political and religious facets of Hebrew.




11/19 -
Chinese Female Filmmaker Series: Part 2  7:00 P.M. in SCA 108
A short series that highlights the influence of Chinese women filmmakers since the 1980s. Bloody Morning (xuese qingchen血色清晨, 1981) and Women’s Story (nvren de gushi女人的故事, 1987) will be shown as part 2 of the series.

Please note that there will be no food, drink, or gum allowed inside the theater.

ABOUT PARKING

The USC School of Cinematic Arts is located at 900 W. 34th St., Los Angeles, CA 90007. Parking passes may be purchased for $8.00 at USC Entrance Gate #5, located at the intersection of W. Jefferson Blvd. & McClintock Avenue. We recommend parking in outdoor Lot M or V, or Parking Structure D, at the far end of 34th Street. Please note that Parking Structure D cannot accommodate tall vehicles such as SUVs. Metered parking is also available along Jefferson Blvd.
