A new screening series featuring previews of upcoming foreign, independent and documentary films.

ABOUT THE SERIES

Outside the Box [Office] is a weekly showcase for upcoming releases highlighting world cinema, documentary and independent film titles. Recognizing a need for greater diversity on campus, the series will draw from around the globe to present movies that may challenge, inspire or simply entertain. The weekly screenings will be on Wednesday nights in the School of Cinematic Arts Complex, George Lucas Building. All screenings and events will be free of charge to USC students, faculty, staff and alumni and guests will be welcome, although we do ask for an electronic reservation for each screening.

09/09 -- White on Rice (U.S.A.)
7:00 P.M. in SCA 112
Director Dave Boyle returns with White on Rice, the comedic story of Jimmy (Hiroshi Watanabe, Letters from Iwo Jima), a misguided 40-year-old divorceé trying to navigate his way through a new life in America and out of his sister Aiko's basement.


09/09 -- Crude (U.S.A.)
8:30 P.M. in SCA 112
Three years in the making, this cinéma-vérité feature from acclaimed filmmaker Joe Berlinger is the epic story of one of the largest and most controversial environmental lawsuits on the planet, the infamous "Amazon Chernobyl" case.


09/16 -- Paris (France)
7:00 P.M. in SCA 108
While waiting for a heart transplant that could save his life, Pierre (Romain Duris) has his world invaded by his sister Elise (Juliette Binoche) and her three children.



09/20 -- The Providence Effect (U.S.A.)
4:00 P.M. in SCA 112
Providence St. Mel, a not-for-profit independent school in Chicago's turbulent West Side, has been sending 100 percent of its graduating class off to college for 30 years, thanks to the leadership of Paul Adams III, an African-American activist with an incredible model for education.


09/23 -- We Live in Public (U.S.A.)
7:00 P.M. in SCA 108
Ten years in the making, We Live In Public reveals the effect the web is having on our society, as seen through the eyes of "the greatest Internet pioneer you've never heard of," artist, futurist and visionary Josh Harris. Winner -- Grand Jury Prize (Documentary), 2009 Sundance Film Festival.


09/30 -- Ong Bak 2: The Beginning (Thailand)
7:00 P.M. in SCA 108
Martial arts superstar Tony Jaa returns with Ong Bak 2: The Beginning — an epic tale of revenge set hundreds of years in the past. An orphan boy raised by bandits is trained to be a killer and prophesied to be the conqueror of an empire.


10/03 -- In Search of Beethoven (U.K.)
2:00 P.M. in SCA 108
From the makers of In Search of Mozart comes a new feature-length biographical film about Ludwig van Beethoven, a documentary that brought together the world's leading performers and experts on Beethoven to reveal new insights into the legendary composer.


10/07 -- The Horse Boy (U.S.A.)
6:00 P.M. in SCA 112
How far would you travel to heal someone you love? An intensely personal yet epic spiritual journey, The Horse Boy follows one Texas couple and their autistic son as they trek on horseback through Outer Mongolia in an attempt to find healing for their son.


10/07 -- Bronson (U.K.)
8:30 P.M. in SCA 112

In 1974, a hot-headed 19 year old named Michael Peterson decided to make a name for himself and so, with a homemade sawn-off shotgun and a head full of dreams, he attempted to rob a post office.  Peterson has subsequently been behind bars for 34 years.


10/14 -- Franco Battiato, Calibro 35 & Street Law (Italy)
6:30 P.M. in SCA 108
An incredible evening of Italian cinema and music, featuring cult musician and filmmaker Franco Battiato, 70's soundtrack-inspired rock band Calibro 35 and classic Italian crime thriller Street Law, by Enzo G. Castellari.


10/16 -- Paranormal Activity (U.S.A.)
7:00 P.M. in SCA 108

After a young, middle class couple moves into what seems like a typical suburban 'starter' tract house, they become increasingly disturbed by a presence that may or may not be somehow demonic but is certainly most active in the middle of the night. Especially when they sleep. Or try to.


10/16 -- Trick 'r Treat (U.S.A.)

9:00 P.M. in SCA 112
In a series of seemingly disparate events, the citizens of a small town discover that nothing is what it seems on the night when the dead rise to walk among us. On the scariest night of year, the ancient traditions of All Hallows Eve are let loose on a small suburban town.


10/21 -- (Untitled) (U.S.A.)
7:00 P.M. in SCA 108

In this smart, satirical comedy, a brooding avant-garde composer falls for the gorgeous owner of a trendy New York art gallery and the quirky worlds of contemporary art and music are set on a hilarious collision course.   


10/25 -- Laila's Birthday (Palestine)
2:30 P.M. in SCA 108

Taxi driver Abu Laila drives his colorful cast of passengers across the city of Ramallah on a sort of road trip that paints the absurdity of the Palestinian situation. Presented in conjunction with the 2009 Arab Film Festival.


10/25 -- Pomegranates and Myrrh (Palestine)
4:30 P.M. in SCA 108

Dancer Kamar's joyful wedding to Zaid is followed almost immediately by Zaid's imprisonment in an Israeli jail for refusing to give up his land. Free-spirited Kamar wants to support her husband and be a dutiful wife but struggles with the idea of giving up dancing and her own dreams.


10/28 -- Pop Skull (U.S.A.)
7:00 P.M. in SCA 112
Pop Skull depicts the lonely and disjointed life of Daniel, a young Alabama pill addict, as his efforts to cope with the trials of his day-to-day life collide with the increasing influence of murderous and displaced spirits that inhabit his home.


10/28 -- The House of the Devil (U.S.A.)
9:00 P.M. in SCA 112
In the 1980s, college student Samantha Hughes takes a strange babysitting job that coincides with a full lunar eclipse. She slowly realizes her clients harbor a terrifying secret; they plan to use her in a satanic ritual.


10/30 -- Baarìa (Italy)
7:00 P.M. in Norris Cinema Theatre

The Oscar-winning filmmaker of Cinema Paradiso, Giuseppe Tornatore, returns to Sicily to tell the very personal story of a family across three generations in the director's hometown of Baarìa. Opening night selection at the 2009 Venice Film Festival.


11/01 -- Oh My God (U.S.A.)
6:00 P.M. in SCA 108

In every corner of the world, there's one question that can never be definitively answered, yet stirs up equal parts passion, curiosity, self-reflection and often wild imagination: "What is God?" Filmmaker Peter Rodger explores this profound, age-old query.


11/11 -- Women in Trouble (U.S.A.)
6:00 P.M. in SCA 112
A comedy about a serpentine day in the life of ten seemingly disparate women – including a porn star, a flight attendant, a psychiatrist, a masseuse, a bartender and a pair of call girls - all with one thing in common: trouble.


11/11 -- The New Twenty (U.S.A.)
8:15 P.M. in SCA 112

A film that charts the lives of five New Yorkers, a mix of gay and straight best friends about to turn thirty. Bound together since college, the group's tight relationship is threatened when an older man joins their ranks and lures the alpha of the pack into a new business venture.


11/15 -- Harishchandrachi Factory (India)
1:00 P.M. in SCA 108
India's official Oscar entry for Best Foreign Language Film is the amazing adventure behind the making of India's first feature film, Raja HarishChandra, in 1913. Followed by a Q&A with writer, director, and producer Paresh Mokashi.


11/17 -- April Showers (U.S.A.)
7:00 P.M. in SCA 110

From writer/director, Andrew Robinson, a survivor of the Columbine High School tragedy, comes April Showers, a dramatized retelling of what it was like to be a survivor in the midst of the nation's largest school shootings.


11/18 -- Rebels of the Neon God (Taiwan)
6:15 P.M. in SCA 108

The film depicts the story of Hsiao Kang, the disaffected son of a taxi driver who drops out of school, and Ah Tze and Ah Bing, a pair of hoodlums who rob coin boxes for arcade money. Followed by a Q&A with director Tsai Ming-liang and lead actor Lee Kang-sheng.


11/22 -- Red Cliff (China)
7:00 P.M. in Norris Cinema Theatre

Red Cliff marks the triumphant return of John Woo, who reunites with international superstar Tony Leung (from the 1992 classic Hard Boiled). A breathtaking war epic, Red Cliff brings to the screen the legendary tale of the Battle of Red Cliff that took place in China in 208 AD.


12/04 -- cin(T)a (Indonesia)
7:00 P.M. in SCA 112

Cina and Annisa love God, and God loves them both. But Cina and Annisa cannot love each other because they call God by different names. Featuring a Q&A with the writer/director.



12/06 -- Valentino The Last Emperor (U.S.A.)
1:00 P.M. in SCA 108
Shown around the world to wide acclaim, this behind-the-scenes look at the world of fashion features unprecedented access to the high temples of Haute Couture. The legendary Valentino Garavani is the star of the film, along with his longtime business partner, Giancarlo Giammetti.


12/06 -- Grandfather is Dead (Philippines)
7:00 P.M. in Norris Cinema Theatre
What happens when a member of a family suddenly dies? What if the family of the deceased is not ready for the eventual passing away of their loved ones – how does one cope with the event? This is the story of the late Juanito Hernandez and his bereaved family.


12/07 -- Broken Embraces (Spain)
7:00 P.M. in Norris Cinema Theatre
Writer/director Pedro Almodóvar and leading actress Penélope Cruz reunite for a new drama about the dual personalities of a film director and screenwriter, who struggles to suppress the memories of a car crash that killed the love of his life.


12/09 -- Dirty Hands: The Art & Crimes of David Choe (U.S.A.)
8:00 P.M. in SCA 112
Director Harry Kim goes through eight haphazard years filled with mayhem to follow and deliver a portrait of David Choe, a young near-schizophrenic street artist that devises numerous criminal schemes that afford him to hitchhike across the globe.


12/13 -- Samson & Delilah (Australia)
6:00 P.M. in SCA 108

A love story of survival, Samson & Delilah is a gritty, uncompromising, richly inventive coming-of-age story of two 14 year-olds from a sleepy Aboriginal community who escape their lives to discover the world outside. Australia's Official Entry for the Best Foreign Language Oscar.


12/16 -- Police, Adjective (Romania)
7:00 P.M. in Norris Cinema Theatre
Cristi is a policeman who refuses to arrest a young man who offers hashish to two of his school mates because he does not want the life of a young man he considers merely irresponsible to be a burden on his conscience.
