USC School of Cinematic Arts alumnus Gregg Helvey, M.F.A. '09, won the gold medal, for narrative films, at the Student Academy Awards. Helvey’s short film, Kavi, tells of an Indian boy forced to work in a brick kiln as a modern-day slave.

Winning students received cash prizes and trophies for films vying for a Student Academy Award during the 36th annual ceremony. Gold medals receive $5,000, silver medals $3,000 and bronze medals $2,000.

Established in 1972, the Student Academy Awards support young filmmakers. The prizes are presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS). Past winners include SCA alumnus Robert Zemeckis.
