Summer Program 2009: More Classes!

USC's summer film program gives participants from around the world an opportunity to attend intensive, thorough, creatively demanding and satisfying filmmaking classes.

Over 30 filmmaking classes cover all aspects of filmmaking, screenwriting, computer graphics/animation & gaming, film & television business and film studies. Students will experience the business of film and the most cutting edge digital technologies.

Here are four more of our featured classes for 2009:


        Music Video Production
Music video is the perfect balance of art and commerce. This class covers everything from production elements to how the industry works, writing and pitching music video treatments, creating distinctive imagery on low budgets, directing talent, gaining representation and navigating the video industry with additional time spent analyzing notable videos.

Each student will be conceptualizing and directing their own music video through the duration of the course and will receive pointers on cinematography, production design, editing and more. Learn more about this class...

The instructor for this course, Drea Clark, is currently the Executive Director of Slamdance as well as the music video programmer for the Los Angeles Film Festival
   
Commercial Production: The Art of the 60-Second Story
Commercial Production is a hands-on filmmaking course that gives you the opportunity to take part in every stage of commercial creation. With insight from the teacher and special guests, you will develop a concept through every stage, including making a pitch, copywriting, directing, shooting and postproduction. This course offers an excellent opportunity to begin developing a commercial reel. In-class sessions will provide a mix of tutorials in screenwriting, Avid editing, cinematography and sound design. Your instructor, Austin Formato, an award-winning commercial director, has worked for such clients as Jaguar, Miller Lite and American Express. He was voted the best young Creative in America in 2001.
   
Directing Actors for the Screen

To attract top actors to your projects, you need to learn how to communicate with them. In class you will work with professional actors and make your own movie so that you may learn about the actor's process, how to speak to actors and ultimately direct them. You will learn basic film acting theory and do practical exercises in each class meeting to acquaint you with the needs and techniques of actors. Andrew Lane has produced over 25 feature films and movies for television including Valley Girl, Night of the Comet and Jake Speed. He has directed numerous films including MGM's Mortal Passions, Lonely Hearts and original movies for CBS and Showtime.
   
Film & Digital Cinematography Class

As an intensive camera, lighting and image design class for emerging cinematographers, producers, directors, editors and writers, this class includes weekly hands-on projects on 35mm and 16mm motion picture cameras as well as the newest HD and DV formats.

Cinematography is a story-inspired image design process and an equipment execution process. In addition to the many collaborative stage and location-based projects, we are also going to hone your design skills through the utilization of the precise process cinematographers go through in preproduction - namely the watching of great film works and the analyzing of powerful scripts. Erick Yates Green obtained an M.F.A. in Production at USC. Early professional work included the honor of assisting the visionary artist and cinematographer, Conrad L. Hall, ASC. Green shot many short films, documentaries and four feature films including Love Philosophy, Prospect, Straight Out of Compton and the Indian Bollywood film entitled Banana Brothers.
