Two wanna-be thugs running from a rookie cop get more than they bargained for when they duck into a Blues joint and hold hostage a group of societal misfits.

Sonnier's first film The Beat was a 2003 Sundance American Spectrum submission. At the time he was a 20-year-old first-time director and junior at USC. The Beat looks at a young black man's divided pursuit of his father's dream that he become a cop and his own desire to be a rapper.
