Bill Whittington News
New book receives excellent reviews
Bill Whittington Attended "The Contemporary Sound Theory" at SCMS Conference in Philadelphia earlier this month.
He also presented a paper called "Sound of the Living Dead," based on a chapter from the new book he is working on for University of Texas Press entitled, Sound Design and Horror. It is his second book in his series on sound design.
Bill has also agreed to organize the sound and music pedagogy panels for the SCMS Sound Interest Group when SCMS visits Los Angeles in 2010.
Bill’s book, Sound Design and Science Fiction, received a very positive review in the scholarly journal, The Velvet Light Trap, Number 61, Spring 2008. (Two additional reviews in other journals are expected this summer).
The reviewer, Lisa Schmidt, after lamenting about the relative lack of attention paid to sound in film studies, says that Bill’s book “is an extremely useful, readable and even necessary book. It represents something new in terms of both film genre and film sound...Thoroughly grounded in histories of technology and industrial practice, it seeks to bridge the gap between theory and practice in the field of sound studies and to forge a new vocabulary around the production and reception of genre films...”
