Speaks at SCMS, Received grant
Institute for Multimedia Literacy associate director Virginia Kuhn gave a talk at SCMS in Philadelphia on Web 3.0, entitled “The Virtual IS the Real.” The panel included Director of Academic Programs, Holly Willis, as well as alum Heidi Cooley.
Virginia also presented at the High Performance Computing Horizons conference in Palm Springs on the IML and then appeared on the Executive Panel with leaders from Boeing, IBM deep computing, SGI, and Pacific Northwest National Labs.
Virginia has also received a grant from the Fund for Innovative Undergraduate teaching for IML 340, The Iraqi Doctors project which will commence next fall in collaboration with videographer, DJ Johnson.
In 2003, working with the Keck School of Medicine, several doctors from Iraq were brought to USC for training; the same group (along with Dr. Randy Sherman and Dean Daley) traveled to Washington, DC to meet with Senator Bill Frist and President Bush. Dean Daley is working toward getting more film footage in Jordan to supplement the student work. This project challenges conventional pedagogy by allowing students to manipulate with film footage, adding to it their own research around many topics suggested by the original.
Finally, Virginia spent several days at the NCSA (National Center for Supercomputing Applications) at University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign working on the digital portfolio.
