Recieves $25,000 grant

Animation and Digital Arts associate Professor Eric Hanson reports that he recently received a $25,000 grant from Microsoft Research to help support his Yosemite Extreme Panoramic Imaging Project.

Nikon USA has donated $8000 in camera gear toward the project, Autodesk is providing software support, and the National Park Service is acting as an official partner. The project will set out to photograph Yosemite Valley's cliff walls in unprecedented detail with 20 photographic teams shooting 500 overlapping shots each simultaneously at various key overlooks, which will then be applied to a 1M digital elevation model.

A final image will be derived digitally which will possess extraordinary and unsurpassed detail, documenting minute geologic features which will act as a key research aid to a park staff geologist to study hazardous rockfall in the park. Yosemite National Park Park Search and Rescue will also derive use from the image as a planning tool for rescue operations. http://www.xrez.com/yose_proj/Yose_index.html
