Critical Studies professor Rick Jewell was quoted in the Los Angeles Times about “The Spirit of Adventure,” a film series organized by the American Cinematheque.  The series highlights classic adventure films that depicted past events, a genre that Jewell said appealed more to past audiences than to today’s cinema-goers. “[S]omehow over the years, we have gotten less and less interested in what happened in the bygone days and much more interested in the here and now and the future,” he explained. Audiences are drawn to films like Pirates of the Caribbean less because of romantic adventure than because of actor Johnny Depp’s character and the fantasy elements, Jewell said.
